Via the EWMG, the city of Mönchengladbach has acquired just under 55 percent of the shares in the Niersbrücke Airport from Düsseldorf Airport, making it the majority shareholder. The financial situation of Mönchengladbach Airport is secured until the end of 2020. A concept is currently being drawn up to develop the airport and reduce losses.
The aim is to further develop the airport itself with regard to so-called shipyard traffic and to strengthen the business location by attracting more aviation-related companies creating new jobs. Mönchengladbach Airport currently accommodates 27 companies and government agencies with some 580 employees.
